D'var Torah, by Rabbi David Baum

B'Shalach

What do we think of when we hear the term: born again? What connotations does it have? When we hear the term born again in our society, we think of Evangelical Christians. The term denotes a very personal relationship. An individual is unhappy with the direction in their lives, they see that there is a better way, in this case, accepting Jesus as their lord, and they are born again. It might surprise you to know that this idea of being “born again” is not so foreign to us as Jews....

AIPAC's Boca Club Reception Featuring Dan Senor

I want to pass on a great opportunity to hear a very interesting author speak, Dan Senor, author of Start Up Nation, on Monday, February 8. This event is being organized by AIPAC, and two of the event's main organizers are our very own Sofie and Barry Vlessing. There is no charge for the event and it should be fantastic. I hope to see you there.

Purim is Here! Order Your Shalach Manot Baskets!

It’s hard to believe the secular New Year is upon us and it is time already to turn our thoughts to Purim, which will be celebrated on February 27th and 28th, 2010. This year, the Shaarei Kodesh Purim Committee will once again be preparing SHALACH MANOT baskets for each of our congregants. This is a way for you to fulfill the two of the three mitzvot that we observe during Purim – giving tzedakah (donation to a charity) and sending shalach manot (a gift of traditional PURIM foods/goodies to two or more friends/family). The third mitzvah is to listen to the reading of the Megillah (the story of Esther).

CSK KASHRUT POLICY

In the past, and in many synagogues today, the synagogue kitchen is a more than adequate space to provide meals for communal meals and is certainly the ideal for preparing meals. It is also the ideal for preparing food for congregational purposes for many reasons, most importantly, the ability to oversee a unified standard of kashrut. Unfortunately, this is not a viable solution for us because we lack the proper space and resources in our synagogue kitchen. This kashrut policy is intended to be in place until we have a sufficient kitchen space in our synagogue. When this occurs, we will revisit our kashrut policy.
