Spreading Torah with Rabbi Baum

**A Six Week Adult Education Course
With Rabbi Baum

Haven’t read Torah since your bar/bat mitzvah? Maybe you never had the chance to read Torah before, or perhaps you have some Torah in you that you want to share but thought, but I don’t know where to even begin?

If you answered yes to these questions, then this course is for you!

Join us for the Spreading Torah Challenge with Congregation Shaarei Kodesh, generously funded by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

During our 6 part series, our cohort of learner’s will learn the basics of Torah and how to best teach Torah in creative ways.

All classes are from 7-8:30 PM
Participants will need to have a general knowledge of Hebrew reading

Class Topics:

What is Torah exactly and how should we “spread” it? – Thursday, March 10

During our introductory lesson, we will try to define the term Torah (hint - it may not be exactly what you think it is!) and learn about the difference between the written Torah and Oral Torah and how it connects us to past, present and future. Together, we will learn new approaches to learning Torah and develop our own personal challenge to learn Torah. During our introductory session, Rabbi Baum will give an overview of the Spreading  Torah Program.

Why do we read Torah in Public? – Thursday, March 24
The historical origins of Torah reading and why it is relevant for us today.

What is the deeper meaning behind a Torah service? – Tuesday, April 5

Why do we have a whole service devoted to Torah? What are gabbais and why do they correct readers? What’s the deeper meaning behind it all?

What is 'Trope' and Why Do We Use It To Read Torah? – Tuesday, April 19
Do you have the Shema memorized? Good news - you already know most of the Trope you need to read Torah! During our class, we will learn about the history of Torah Trope and learn the basic sounds.

Taking Hold of Torah and the Choreography of the Torah Service – Tuesday, May 3

Ever want to learn how to do Hagbah and Geliliah, how we dress the Torah, and why it is important? Join us for a ‘hands on’ evening where we learn the choreography of the Torah service and where fellow congregants will teach each participant how to properly perform Hagbah and Gelilah as well as learning the meaning behind the practice.

How To Write and Deliver a Dvar Torah – Tuesday, May 10

What is the ‘secret sauce’ to a good sermon? Join Rabbi Baum and a guest teacher to learn about the art of homiletics, the art of preaching! During this class, you will begin to develop your own voice as a teacher of Torah both through speaking and writing as we engage a guest teacher on the art of writing.
